Wie sehr prägen koloniale Wurzeln die Afrikastudien in Deutschland? Das ist eine Frage, der das neue Forschungsprojekt „African Studies in Germany through the lens of Critical Race Theory“ an der Martin-Luther-Universität in Halle nachgehen möchte. Mit dabei im Forschungsteam ist die Universität Bayreuth und das Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung in Berlin. Dabei im Fokus sind Lehrtexte, Archive, die Vereinigung der Afrikastudien Deutschland, aber auch Museen, öffentliche Räume und der Beitrag antikolonialer Aktivist*innen zu der Debatte. Einer der beteiligten Forscher ist Yusuf Serunkuma und mit ihm haben wir über das Vorhaben gesprochen. Er selber kommt aus Uganda und dort auch als Journalist und Aktivist tätig.

How strongly do the colonial roots influence Africa Studies in Germany? That is the question that a new research project called „African Studies in Germany through the lens of Critical Race Theory“ poses. The project is co-run by the Martin-Luther-University in Halle, the University Bayreuth and the Max-Planck-Institut for Scientific Research on Education in Berlin. The focus is on Textbooks, Archives, the German association of Africa Studies, but also museums, public spaces and the role of anticolonial activists within the debate. One of the researchers is Yusuf Serunkuma, with whom we discussed the research project. He is from Uganda and works as a journalist there, as well as being an activist.
